====================================== Changing Times in Detective Fiction -- World Edition ====================================== In this class we will read classics of detective fiction from around the world, focusing on the hardboiled and social styles, and always proceding in pairs -- from each country, an older author and then a newer one. This way, we can explore how the genre has changed over time, and how it varies from place to place. We will pay special attention to language and character, social forces and local customs, all the things that make these hard-hitting, wise-cracking, sometimes gut-wrenching novels not only fun, but moving and memorable. Our goal will be to develop as sensitive, intelligent, self-aware readers, and also as writers, learning to express and analyze our reactions in lucid prose. Course evaluation will be based on reading quizzes, exams (written and/or oral), in-class writing assignments, and two short essays. Required books (print editions): - Raymond Chandler, The Big Sleep, Vintage Crime, 1992. - Miyuke Miyabe, All She Was Worth, tr. Alfred Birnbaum, Mariner Books, 1996. - Jean-Claude Izzo, Total Chaos, tr. Howard Curtis, Europa Editions, 2018. - Leonardo Sciascia, The Day of the Owl, tr. Archibald Colquhoun and Arthur Oliver, NYRB Classics, 2003. All other readings will be provided as PDFs.
