Graduate students working towards the Comparative Literature M.A. or Ph.D. can specialize in Comparative Arts. Broadly speaking, Comparative Arts considers the relationship between literature and other modes of artistic expression such as music, painting, film, theatre, and photography.

It is also possible to pursue a double Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and a related discipline such as Art History.

As part of their training, graduate students specializing in Comparative Arts have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses such as C255 Modern Literature and the Other Arts. This class has the unique distinction of being the country’s first course in comparative arts, and, with frequent updates, has now been offered continuously for more than half a century.
