Topic: The nature of evil
"The Literature of Evil / Evil in Literature" Evil repels us, and evil fascinates us. Which is why literature is fascinated by evil. In this course, we study extraordinary instances of how evil is staged in literature. Do we learn things about evil that we would otherwise not have known? Do stories and fictional characters keep us safe from evil, the evil in others but also the evil in ourselves? Or do they perhaps implant evil thoughts in our minds? If so, what does that mean for the ethics of reading? Some of the texts and authors to be included: Genesis 2-3 (the Fall), the Book of Job, Augustine, Milton, Leibniz, Kleist, Kafka, L.F. Céline, Primo Levi, Hannah Arendt, and J.M. Coetzee.
