A war zone, a safe space, a distant ocean, another planet, a shared bed--where do cultures meet and what happens to the people who meet there? Religious customs, table manners, styles of dress, political values, forbidden love, personal aesthetics--how do these make up a culture and become great literature? We will grapple with these and many more questions as we cross geographical frontiers and national borders, centuries, seas, outer space, race and class, and social taboos in order to explore the infinite variety of cross-cultural encounters. Our reading list ranges from ancient Greece through medieval Italy into south Asia, into the worlds of iconic science fiction and post-war America and France: Aeschylus' stage dramas Persians and Suppliants, The Travels of Marco Polo, H.G. Wells' The First Men in the Moon, and James Baldwin's queer classic Giovanni's Room. Work load consists of two analytical and comparative essays, a case-study of cultural customs, short proposals, weekly reading, and class participation. Any interested student is welcome regardless of major! Successful completion of the General Education English composition credit is required.
