He received an Executive Council Award from the African Literature Association (ALA) at the association’s 48th Annual Meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee, in May 2023, following the completion of his three‐year term as an executive councilor. During that term, he hosted the monthly ALA Lecture Series broadcast live on YouTube.

Both talks drew on larger works in progress, as did his keynote address at the April 2023 Rutgers University conference "Weird Russian Nineteenth Century," entitled "Romantic Aesthetics and Psychographic Doubles." Forthcoming work includes an article on "The Contemporary Russian Novel," which is scheduled to appear in the Oxford Handbook of the Russian Novel in 2024.

In the spring, Hertz was named as a participant in an upcoming conference, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, on the American composer and writer Charles Ives. Hertz was one of the collaborators who helped the Jacobs School of Music secure NEH funding in order to present the Music Unwound festivals, which will feature cross-disciplinary programs that focus on interconnections between classical music and the humanities.

In February 2023 Johnston was runner-up for the inaugural Wisconsin Prize for Poetry in Translation, for his translation of Psalms (Psalmy) by Polish poet Julia Fiedorczuk. Psalms will be published in Fall 2023 by the University of Wisconsin Press.

In May 2023 Johnston delivered the Jan Rusiecki Memorial Lecture, entitled “Translating Poland,” at the University of Warsaw.

From 2023 – 2026 Johnston will serve as the first Michael Henry Heim Chair in Central and East European Letters at Indiana University.

In 2024, her article “Gender and Representation: New Approaches to Medieval Literature” from the Wiley‐Blackwell Companion to World Literature will also appear in its new concise edition and her introduction to the new French translation of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Legend of Good Women will be published. She is also continuing to work on her current book project, Reading the Self and the Other: Concepts of Identity in Medieval European Literature.

Prior to attending the week-long Institute as a faculty leader, she joined Prof. Emerita Eileen Julien for a colloquium and exhibit in honor of visual artist and public intellectual, Kalidou Sy, held at the Musée des Civilisations Noires in Dakar, Senegal. Alongside the late artists’ major works, the exhibit included a collection of books including Panaïté’s recent volume Necrofiction and the Politics of Literary Memory (Liverpool UP, 2022) which features on its cover the painting Joola created by Sy in the immediate aftermath of the eponymous 2002 shipwreck.

In the spring, he participated in the ACLA conference in Chicago with a paper entitled “Kleist's Catastrophes.” He also published an article on the role of pain and anesthesia in Ernst Jünger and continues to work on his larger projects of affect and legitimization. In July, he was appointed to serve as chair in the Department of Germanic Studies.

Beyond this, a handful of things: (1) his review of Polina Barskova’s poetry collection Air Raid, in Valzhyna Mort’s translation, was published in Slavic Review; (2) an article “Morlach’s Blood in Fiume’s Mensa” will appear in Gabriele D’Annunzio and World Literature; (3) Variaciones Borges published Valentino’s Borgesian translational fantasy “Pierre Menard’s Igor Severyanin” in its Fall 2022 issue; (4) he completed, with Miriam Shrager and Sibelan Forrester, the long translation and critical apparatus of Vladimir Propp’s Historical Roots of the Wondertale and sent it out for review; (5) he edited a special issue of the journal M-Dash: a journal of translation, which was devoted to Ukraine; and (6) he was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to Croatia for 2023-24 to work on his book Sea of Intimacy. Finally, over the Summer and Fall of 2022, Valentino served on the selection committee for the National Book Awards in the “translated literature” category, which culminated in a black-tie event, which he attended, in New York City in November 2022.

Earlier in the spring, on March 27, Prof. Velázquez presented her book, Promiscuous Grace: Imagining Beauty and Holiness with Saint Mary of Egypt (Chicago UP, 2023), at Columbia University as guest of the Department of Religion and the Institute for Religion Culture and Public Life. The talk, which focused on the visual and textual representations of Saint Mary of Egypt, a holy harlot, was followed by a conversation with Clémence Boulouque. Finally, in May, Prof. Velázquez received news that she had been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure!
